Our History

The Murphy & Hartelius Legacy

Murphy & Hartelius/M&H Uniforms is a family run business, founded by William Murphy who had been outfitting pilots out of Shannon Airport through Burtons Clothiers in Limerick, Ireland.   It was then that  Bill was approached with the idea of moving closer to the airlines he worked with, to better service their uniform needs.

At 41 years of age, William move his family to the San Francisco Bay Area, and he began working with nearby Panam, World Airways and United Airlines offices.  The client list began to grow and Roger Hartelius, his partner and master tailor from Gothenburg, Sweden, were soon fitting sports teams, municipal transportation lines and of course, their airlines customer base had grown to include  legacy airlines like Hughes Airwest,  Wien Air, ERA aviation, Pride Air, NYJet, AirCAL, ACA,  Air Train, Midwest Express, ATA,  Aloha Airlines and Island Air.

By the mid-1980’s, M&H became one of the first “in-stock” career apparel businesses, catering specifically to pilots, flight attendants, customer service agents and the transportation industry.

It was at this point that the company found its niche, resulting in its most innovative and quality “in-stock” products. Along with its made to measure suiting background, M&H Uniforms was able to keep the “custom” business going and for those who wanted some of each, the “semi-custom” option was created. Today M&H’s product line is all-encompassing, ranging from jackets, pants, skirts, vests, dresses, shirts, ties, coats, hats and much more “in-stock” to “custom” designs.
